7 Ways To Create Information Products To Promote Your Business

by Charles Brown

If you are a service professional, you don't sell cars, or clothing, or jewlry or anything tangible your potential customer can touch or inspect or take for a test drive. Instead you sell the ultimate intangible, yourself and your knowledge.

And yet your prospective clients still want something they can "test drive" before they buy your services. This is why information products are so important to anyone who sells their own services. These materials become the proof of your knowledge and expertise. They are visible and convincing to anyone interested in what you can offer them.

Here are some easy ways to create your own information products:Start with tip sheets. These can be as short as one page and as long as an entire book. Organize your knowledge in a numerical or bullet point format and keep adding to your list every day. In a week or two you could easily have hundreds of tips that would be useful to your prospective clients.

Tape every public speaking opportunity. Get out there and find small groups who might be interested in your topic. Don't ask for a fee but do ask for permission to record what you say. Chances are one speech will not suffice, there will be background noises and other factors. But after you have three speeches recorded, you can edit them into a single CD you can give out to clients.

Write a blog. Your blog won't be the information product itself, it will be where you create your information products. A few months after I started my own blog, I noticed that I had organized my expertise and written so much material that I practically had several information products already writer. It is now my own little machine to produce all the information products I will ever need. Already I have outlined two complete books just based upon my blog posts.

Rework and re-slant material you have already produced to create new products. My blog posts have become magazine articles and an ebook. The new products are not mere rehashed materials, I just use the first format as a springboard to help me create something new that builds upon what I've already written.

Outline a course. You can easily find opportunities to teach classes at local adult education venues or online in the form of an ecourse. Your outline should suffice for the first class, but you will want to create more materials for your students as you go along. Each handout you write, each syllabus, each workseet and each workbook can all be used as information products to your prospective clients.

Conduct recorded telephone interviews with experts in your field. Have several prepared questions and talking points that you give to your interviewee in advance. Then after the call has been recorded, you can distribute the CD as an information product.

Compile Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). Over time, your clients will ask you many of the same questions. Write these down and then write out thoughtful answers. You can post these FAQs on your website or they can be separate information products.

As you produce your information products, be aware of what your audience wants to know and needs to know. Things you take for granted may be very insightful to your reader. As Michael Port, author of Book Yourself Solid, points out, "one product will turn into another and another - the possibilities are endless." Nothing will build your credibility faster than producing information that serves your prospective clients' needs. Think of creating your information products as being your fast track to success.
