How to Choose a TV Wall Mount
by Elysse Biaca
So you have decided to mount your TV to the wall. The only decision you have left to make is which type of TV wall mount you require or which will best suit your needs.
There are three main types of mounts:
1. Low Profile Mount - of the three types of mounts, this one is the cheapest and the most simple to install. If you can hang a picture on the wall, you can install a low profile mount. Aside from its simplicity, the drawback to this type of mount is that you cannot adjust it once it is installed. It does not tilt to the left or to the right, nor does it adjust upwards or downwards. This can prove difficult if you want to pull cables or adjust them from the back of your television set. This means that you will probably have to take the TV down from the wall to change cables or add other accessories.
2. Tilting Wall Mount - this type of TV mount can cost a little bit more money than your basic low profile mount, but it has more range of motion. These types of mounts are nearly as simple to install as the low profile mount, and they will adjust vertically. There is a pivot point in the middle of the bracket which will allow you to move the TV if you need access to the back for cable changes or other connections or if you just want to change the viewing angle.
3. Full Motion Wall Mount - this type of mount has a full range of motion, but the mount itself is fairly expensive and complicated to install because of all of the moving parts. You may need several people to help you to install it to make sure that you can hang the TV without the mount swiveling off to the side. With these types of mounts you can tilt and swivel the TV and rotate the TV away from the wall. You will easily be able to access cables if you need to.
Once you decide which type of bracket you will purchase, take measurements of your TV screen, both width and length so that you purchase the correct mounting kit. Check the specifications of the mount to see how much weight it will hold as well. The last thing you want to do is install your TV only to find that the bracket can't support it's weight, causing it to fall to the floor.
