Scavenger Hunt For Love - A Short Love Story
by Sandy A. Ingram
As I stood there looking at the rules for the scavenger hunt, I felt a tinge of excitement. Over 270 single men had signed up for the scavenger hunt for the right date. For sure, at least one of them would be a good match for me.
Signing up for the scavenger hunt was my best friend, Idas idea. She was sent an e-invite from a singles group and begged me to go with her.
True enough, my dating pool was limited to two dates in the past six months, however, going on a scavenger hunt to find a date, wasnt my idea of how to meet men.
After registering online and paying our registration fee, we received instruction via email. Our instructions were to meet in San Franciscos Union Square at 12 noon, on the second Saturday in the month of August.
When Ida and I reached Union Square, it was obvious, the event would be interesting.
As usual Union Square was filled with tourist shoppers and visitors. Scavenger hunt participants were all ages, colors, sizes and shapes.
Because this is San Francisco, the gays were included. I was more than anxious to see how they would mix the gays and the straights into the same dating game.
Most of the gays who had signed up for the event, were standing in the middle of the square, while the straights were scattered around the perimeter of the square, in small groups.
I had purchased new sun glasses for the event, which were to serve as a shield from direct eye contact and allow me to look at the other participants without being detected. It was a great idea, and that is probably why most of the other singles were their sun glasses in the same way. We looked like the men in black with plastic badges around our necks.
The event organizers had thought it best for participants to ride public transportation during the scavenger hunt. This was a great idea, since you can rarely find a park in San Francisco. And it allowed us to drink, at the different destinations, during the scavenger hunt, without having to worry about driving.
Once the signal was given, we were to open our sealed white envelopes and follow the instructions for the four hour scavenger hunt.
It was the instructions, which separated the gays from the straights. In fact the instructions provided a variety of options based upon ones sexual preferences, age, personality traits and parental status.
Each question had three options and depending on your personal answer, you would be sent to a particular land mark restaurant in San Francisco.
Since we paid for drink tickets in our registration, it was not hard to figure out that each destination would be a bar and or restaurant.
At each destination, we were suppose to exchange contact information with at least three participants. There were a total of three destinations before we would all meet back at the 32nd roof top restaurant at a major hotel, in downtown San Francisco.
Meeting up with the same person, more than once would be an indication of a possible match.
My first option was a hip hang out on Embarcadero for the under thirty crowd or a popular restaurant, bar on Pier 39. Because I was in my late twenties, I decided to go with the over thirty crowd. Ida, strangely enough went with the under thirty crowd. I found that odd, because we are the same age.
I meet a handsome man at Pier 39. And then I meet a wonderful young doctor as I was leaving the Pier 39 restaurant. To protect the privacy of those who participated - that is all that I will say for now.
My next option, landed me in Ghirardelli Square, which is located within walking distance from Pier 39. Oddly enough, I meet the same two gentlemen I had meet at Pier 39, plus a third guy, that I felt no real connection with.
My third destination choice, was all the way down Geary Blvd to the Cliff House Restaurant & Bar. This particular restaurant is a very old and famous landmark in the city of San Francisco and gets its name from the fact, that it actually sits on a cliff, over looking the Pacific Ocean.
As I was getting out of the cab, (I was not hot on riding the bus for the long ride) I noticed that the young doctor was just entering the front door of the restaurant. I felt a small amount of fear. What would he think, running into me three times? Would he accept that as a sign, that we were compatibility, at least on the surface?
It was like he heard my thoughts. He turned around just as he was going into the door and looked into my face. I forgot to put my sun glasses on, after searching for money to pay the cab driver.
He saw me completely and totally, my spirit and my soul. I felt completely undressed.
He smiled and held the door open for me.
We decided to get a bite to eat, rather than sit at the bar, alone with other scavenger hunt participants and tourist from every part of the world. (The truth is, there were no seats at the bar)
To make a long story short, the lunch lead to dinner at his home, which lead to breakfast the next morning. We kept almost constant company from that day forward.
We are married now and are expecting our first child in May!
